Caminante
I have been a bit out of touch on my WordPress blog because of work, but I’m hoping no one has forgotten me … I’ll be catching up with everyone’s posts soon. Meanwhile I’m leaving you with an image taken in Salamanca, Spain.
When I saw this gentleman walking on the street covering himself from the rain lots of thoughts came to my mind – how long has he been walking?, where was he going?, what was he thinking? – and then I also thought of Antonio Machado‘s poem: ‘Caminante no hay camino’.
Here is an extract from that beautiful poem:
Wanderer, your footsteps are
the road, and nothing more;
wanderer, there is no road,
the road is made by walking.
By walking one makes the road,
and upon glancing behind
one sees the path
that never will be trod again.
Wanderer, there is no road–
Only wakes upon the sea.
Nice to see you back again, Alicia! I loved Salamanca, though I had only one afternoon/evening and the next early morning there. Thanks for the memory jog–there was thick fog in the morning, and I really should do a Places Remembered post. I really like your caminante shot!
i LOVE this photo. there is so much to it.
GREAT shot. Only in Europe can these shots really be appreciated. The long journey ahead; a classic for all time.
Sincerely
Todd
Brilliant !!
excellent!!!
reminds of the the song — mi viejo.
a though provoking photograph indeed, the man seems to have a lot of character and so does the background. Looking forward to seeing you back soon Alicia.
Thanks everyone for your nice comments!
Alicia, I followed up on my plan to post a few photos from Salamanca and included a link to your site in the process. OK?
Absolutely! Thanks Gary!
Great:)
I like this picture a lot. The man’s almost disconsolate bearing carries much of the narrative of the photograph, but the subject matter is very much open to interpretations. Well done.
Superbe!
Thanks Kelly, this is one of my fav images. Every time I look at it I’m always wondering what that old man was thinking…
